Pauli Murray November 21, 1967 letter to Dr. Kathryn F. Clarenbach, Chair of the National Board of NOW Beloved Report Reader: With the Pauli Murray Family Home, our National Historic Landmark, open to the public for more than a year, the Pauli Murray Center for History and Social Justice has continued to mature beyond our first steps as a preservation project shared among friends and incubated at Duke University. We retain a brilliant team that stewards our important labors of love with detail and care, and we offer a dynamic slate of tours, programs, and collaborations that helps more people remember Pauli in order to move today’s justice work forward into our future. And despite this incredibly harmful political climate, I’m pleased to report that we are scaling more expansively and operating more sustainably, stretching to reach a new normal of $1 MILLION in annual revenue. I offer this clear, concrete financial figure with courage, aware of the scary times through which we move presently. And as tempting as it is to let our fears divide and disintegrate us, I remain energized by our beloved ancestor’s wisdom from the 20th century, encouraging us to pursue “a unifying principle” like wholeness, rather than fragmentation. Written a day after their 57th birthday, Pauli’s prudent reflection reminds us that they encountered challenge after challenge over the course of their lifetime, and I’m consequently inspired by a legacy of political advocacy that affirms the strategy of being your whole self to bring us together for more generative political engagement. May we be so motivated to pursue what we deserve with dignity, even when the powers that be seek to stop us. However your political praxis might operate today, I submit respectfully that it is not strongest when operating alone in fragmented isolation. With earnest thanks to our community of partners near and far, we have endured inclement conditions of erasure and divestment, and we have leveraged our resources to do more with less. The support that we have received this year has made a world of difference for us, strengthening our roots, widening our margins of income and impact. I invite you, and all people of peace, to show up whole and to join us in this ongoing effort to keep the memory of the name, life, and legacy of Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray alive and well. With us you’ll find that the company, while far from perfect, is committed, and that our work is a portal to both personal and political practices that demand our very best. As we transition inside of violently flawed systems, this work continues, and we welcome people of peace who are ready to work with us. Peace & Love, Jesse N. Huddleston, Board Chair 22 23
