The Pauli Murray family home was recognized
as a National Treasure in 2015 by the National
Trust for Historic Preservation and in 2016 was
designated a National Historic Landmark by
the US Department of the Interior. It is the 39th
National Historic Landmark in North Carolina
and the first in the state to focus specifically
on women’s experience. We believe our site
to be the first in the nation focused on the life
and legacy of an African American LGBTQ
person. The significance of Pauli Murray’s life
and work on past, present, and future civil and
human rights advocacy necessitated a complete
restoration of the Fitzgerald family home at 906
Carroll St.
Thanks to the support of the Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation, the Pauli Murray Center was able
to transform the Pauli Murray family home into a
visitor-ready space complete with an inaugural
exhibit in September of 2024. This investment,
along with funding from the North Carolina
Land and Water Fund to purchase the historic
site’s land and structures, has helped to fulfill
a longstanding promise of preservation to the
community.
The public opening of the Pauli Murray Center for History and Social
Justice was the culmination of over a decade of collaborative community
effort in support of Pauli Murray’s life and legacy. The Grand Opening
celebration included free tours of the home along with a variety of history,
advocacy, and art-focused activities for all ages.
