EXHIBITION & TOURS
“Pauli Murray: Coming Home,” illuminates
Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray’s work, life and legacy
through the themes of identity, activism, love,
and joy. The exhibit challenges visitors to
consider Murray as an everyday person who
did remarkable things. This invites visitors
to activate contemporary social justice work
in their spheres of influence by adopting
Murray’s activist framework; which requires
that we have a clear mission, concrete action
steps to execute that mission, and a strong set
of values to ground those action steps.
Visitors can experience the exhibition
independently through a self-guided tour,
or under the guidance of a staff member or
volunteer via guided tours.
The guided tour includes prompted reflections,
anecdotes about the home and surrounding
neighborhood, and a view of artifacts that
perfectly represent the engine of Murray’s
work. Interactive activities give all visitors an
opportunity to take a memento of their time at
the Center with them. The exhibit is multimedia
and multi-sensory, honoring the various ways
we see, feel, and hear Murray’s words echo
from the past, into the present, and inevitably
into the future.
“The place had a ragged beauty. Honeysuckle and morning-glory vines
flowed over the sagging fences and covered the old latticed wellhouse.
A trellis of red and white rambler roses sheltered our back door from
the cemetery…When I was a small child, Grandmother planted a young
orchard of plums, peaches, cherries and pears just below the wellhose.
As I watched her setting out the slender twigs, she told me, ‘I won’t be
here when these bear fruit, child, but they’re for your time.’”
