“Pauli Murray: Coming Home,” illuminates 
Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray’s work, life and legacy 
through the themes of identity, activism, love, 
and joy. The exhibit challenges visitors to 
consider Murray as an everyday person who 
did remarkable things. This invites visitors 
to activate contemporary social justice work 
in their spheres of influence by adopting 
Murray’s activist framework; which requires 
that we have a clear mission, concrete action 
steps to execute that mission, and a strong set 
of values to ground those action steps. 
Visitors can experience the exhibition 
independently through a self-guided tour, 
or under the guidance of a staff member or 
volunteer via guided tours. 
The guided tour includes prompted reflections, 
anecdotes about the home and surrounding 
neighborhood, and a view of artifacts that 
perfectly represent the engine of Murray’s 
work. Interactive activities give all visitors an 
opportunity to take a memento of their time at 
the Center with them. The exhibit is multimedia 
and multi-sensory, honoring the various ways 
we see, feel, and hear Murray’s words echo 
from the past, into the present, and inevitably 
into the future.
“The place had a ragged beauty. Honeysuckle and morning-glory vines 
flowed over the sagging fences and covered the old latticed wellhouse. 
A trellis of red and white rambler roses sheltered our back door from 
the cemetery…When I was a small child, Grandmother planted a young 
orchard of plums, peaches, cherries and pears just below the wellhose. 
As I watched her setting out the slender twigs, she told me, ‘I won’t be 
here when these bear fruit, child, but they’re for your time.’”
